Dear Parent or Guardian,
It is my pleasure to be your son or daughter's criminal justice teacher this year at Ross S. Sterling High School. Whether they are enrolled in Principle of law, Law Enforcement I or Law Enforcement II or Law Enforcement Practicum. The purpose of this message is to tell you a little bit about the program as well as about myself.
I am a retired veteran of the Baytown Police Department where I served for 29 years and obtained the rank of Corporal. During my tenure with the Baytown Police Department, I served the citizens of Baytown in many different roles.
I have numerous years of experience in Patrol and Investigations, during my time in the Patrol Division, I was selected to serve as one of the departments Field Training Officers. I was also assigned to the Departments Crime Prevention Division, where I served as a DARE instructor for three years as well as obtained my Certified crime prevention specialist certification. During my time assigned to the Crime Prevention Division, I created the Baytown Citizens Police Academy as well as assisted in creating the High School Crime Stoppers programs.
I was fortunate to spend the last 19 years in the Department assigned to the Baytown Police Academy, During my time at the academy I taught numerous Law Enforcement courses ranging from Firearms, Police Driving, Police Ethics, Crisis Intervention as well as Basic Police academy courses,
I honorably retired from the Baytown Police Department in January 2015, with a Masters Peace Officer license and well over 3000 hours of continuing education in Law Enforcement courses,
Prior to my service with the Baytown Police Department, I served four years in the U.S. Army as a Combat Engineer, where I obtained the rank of Sergeant before I was honorably discharged.
The courses are college level and cover various elements within the criminal justice system. The subject matter of these courses are sometimes very adult in nature, especially when we discuss crimes against people. The topics are covered in a professional manner, but are discussed in detail. If your child has an interest in any aspect of criminal justice, then a frank discussion of his/her future vocation will serve them well.
My expectations of your child are high. Society wants and needs only the best when it comes to our criminal justice professionals and investigators. My goal is to provide your child with an understanding of the criminal justice system and professional methods used in today’s crime investigations. Furtherance of that goal will be social skills such as being polite and showing respect, and being properly groomed and dressed are emphasized. The Goose Creek C.I.S.D. student dress code will be adhered to.
You are always welcome to visit my class and I look forward to meeting you in the future.
Sincerely and Professionally,
Cpl. Steve Denton (ret).
